The ISLU library staff members are happy to see you as our reader and to provide you with a full range of information on our collections and resources. For you to accomplish your studies and research successfully we keep you informed on the structure, opening hours and resources of the library.

About the library
The library of Irkutsk State Linguistic University was established concurrently with the foundation of the Institute of Foreign Languages in 1948 in Irkutsk.
Today the library is provided with well-equipped loan department, two reading halls and language centers (372 seats ). The Library print collections comprise 331467 items, including book collection of 306064 items.

Loan department
Address: building D, room 109
Opening hours:
Monday – Saturday: 8.30 – 17.00
3-d Wednesday every month – cleaning day.
The loan department accumulates most of book collections. You can order any book for home use. Information on items availability is laid out in the catalogues (print and electronic versions). Our topical exhibitions (2-3 exhibitions a month) will help you learn more about the books.
The loan department also organizes a permanent exhibition “Shall we have a read?” It displays literature in several languages for individual reading. To borrow these books from the library you do not need a preliminary order.
Course-books and scientific literature on linguistics, Russian and various dictionaries may also be borrowed at a verbal request. All the other items are to be ordered and may be received within one hour after the order submission.

Course-book reading hall
Location: ground floor, building D, room 111.
Opening hours:
Monday – Friday: 8.30 – 19.00
Saturday - 9.00 – 18.00
2-nd Wednesday every month – cleaning day
The collections of the reading hall include textbooks, books and journals on the following disciplines: pedagogy, training methodology, psychology, linguistics, literary studies, informatics, Language dictionaries, and various encyclopedias are also available in the reading hall.

Reading hall of scientific literature
Location: building A, room 37
Opening hours:
Monday – Saturday: 8.30 – 19.00
4-th Wednesday every month – cleaning day
The collections of the reading hall comprise publications of leading Russian and foreign linguists, works of ISLU professors and teachers as well as theses and monographs. The reading hall offers scientific literature on the following subjects: linguistics, Russian, foreign languages, sociology, history, philosophy.

Rare book section
Location: building D, room 111
Opening hours:
Monday – Friday: 8.30 – 17.00
2-nd Wednesday every month – cleaning day
The collection comprises about 2500 books in Russian and foreign languages dated XVII – XX centuries. It is mainly represented by belles-lettres items, art albums dated from the XIX-XX centuries, dictionaries and reference-books.

Bibliography/Information section
Location: building D, room 112
Opening hours:
Monday – Friday: 8.30 – 17.00
The section offers reference literature (encyclopedia, encyclopedic dictionaries, glossaries, guidebooks, special language dictionaries), abstract journals (linguistics, sinology), bibliographic databases created by the section staff (higher education, methodology of foreign language training, publications of ISLU professors and teachers, linguistics, school pedagogy, pre-school pedagogy, country-studies, etc.).
The section houses a permanent exhibition “Novelty books”. The staff members are happy to answer your questions through the “Virtual information desk”, to select literature on the topics of interest, to consult you on selection and listing literature in compliance with GOSTs, to check your reference lists in the term-papers, graduation theses and scientific publications.

Excerpt from the Library user guidelines
1.10. At the end of each academic year the students are required to re-register their library cards and return to the library all the items borrowed. The readers who fail to go through re-registration will not be served by the library.
1.11. In case of leaving the University the readers should return to the library all the items registered at their name and hand over their library cards to the library staff. The students applying for academic leave should return all the items to the library.
1.12. Should a reader fail to return any registered items to the library by their due date, he/she shall not be allowed to use the library for one month or shall pay for the use of literature beyond the timeframes stated by the library in compliance with the Payable Services Price-list. 2.1. To receive the items required the reader should present the library card (a post-graduate correspondence student – post-graduate student’s card, outside readers – identity card and payment receipt from the University accountant) and sign for the receipt of each item in the registry form. The registry form or a record in the electronic reader’s card is considered a document certifying the date and fact of issuing to the reader and receipt by the librarian of books and other printed items.
2.2. Encyclopedia, reference editions, rare and valuable books, as well as items received through the inter-library loan system, are only offered for use in the reading halls.
2.3. Items may be taken away from the reading halls for copying only with the permission of librarian.
